Nafplion

Nafplion

This port is located on the east of the Peloponnese, right next to the picturesque and historical old city of Nafplion, which was announced to be the capital of modern Greece in 1829. The city itself is worth spending lots of time by walking around the little alleys and taking pictures of the neoclassical buildings, old and historical churches, the archeological museum and several more, as well as Sydagma square, all paved in marble. The city is built on the foothills of a larger rock, on which the spectacular Palamidi fort is built, and a shorter rock on which the citadel - Acronafplia (Acropolis of Nafplion) is built.

Since the very ancient times the whole area of Argolis has been important, with most of its settlements having being established and flourishing in the Mycenean era. Near Nafplion one can visit the ancient site of Tiryns, or Mycenae, or Epidaurus, or Nemea and farther away one can see the ruins of Ancient Corinth, as well as the Corinth Canal.

Surrounded by the teal waters of the Aegean Sea, vast, imposing, Monemvasia is an iceberg-like slab of rock, with sheer cliffs rising hundreds of metres from the sea, linked to the mainland by a single, highly defendable causeway. Monemvasia, the only still inhabited archaeological site in Greece, is a traditional medieval town inside a Venetian castle. Castles, walls, old mansions, narrow cobbled lanes, churches, low arches and vaults, coats of arms, imperial marble thrones, Byzantine icons, all give the impression of a town untouched by time.

For those of view that have the luck to stop at the port of Kavala, this will be a fascinating experience and will give you the chance to enjoy the beauty and unique architecture of this city that was first built on the 7th century BC as a colony of the Eretrians, therefore it was named Neapolis, meaning in Greek, new city.

The city remained important throughout the centuries and during the several occupations that Greece has gone through, something that is clear on the different architectural elements on its buildings, but one of the most important historical events about it, has been the arrival of St. Paul in 49 AD.

The name the city has today, Kavala, is either coming from the Italian word cavallo, which means horse, since the whole city is like a rider on its horse, in this case the rock of the mountain, or from the Mediterranean city of Skavalia that the barbarians destroyed and its inhabitants immigrated to Kavala.

Today the city remains very beautiful and is famous for several things, among which stands out the large amounts of fresh fish that all the boats you will see by the old port fish and the several tavernas next to the water, where someone can taste the fish and several other unique specialties.

A mere five miles from the Turkish coast, this Greek island in the Aegean Sea is famous for the quality of its exports, which include mastic, olives, figs and wine. Khyos contains a wealth of historical sites, including an Ottoman-period castle and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nea Moni, which is an 11th-century monastery built with funds donated by Constantine IX. One might also take a walk through time, exploring archaeological sites that go as far back as the Neolithic age, and continue through the Hellenistic, Roman and Ottoman ages.

The largest of the Ionian Islands, Cephalonia possesses a classic landscape with an arid mountain interior and a rocky seacoast punctuated by bays and beaches. Mount Ainos, the island's major peak, towers a mile above sea level, while the busy seaport of Argostoli is Cephalonia's largest town. The bay of Argostoli is a wonderful natural landscape which is the main reason why the port in one of the most beautiful Mediterranean ports.
