Monks descended in the nets or on retractable wooden ladders up to 40m long to the fertile valleys below to grow grapes, corn and potatoes. Each community developed its own resources and by the end of the 14th century, the Grand Meteoron emerged as the dominant community. The rock monasteries have been characterized by UNESCO as a unique phenomenon of cultural heritage. You will enjoy a local private guided tour of two of the six monasteries. Full day tour to Argolis

10 h. tour (Private tour)

(transportation + guided tour of Mycenae + short stop at the city of Nafplion + guided tour of Epidaurus + stop at the Corinth Canal)

For those of you that can't leave Athens without visiting the one of the most important areas in ancient times, the land of Argolis, this is a good chance to experience as much as possible of this sacred land.

Departing from Athens, you will head west, continuing your journey along the highway. One of the most remarkable sights along the way is the historic and unique location between Mount Aegaleo and the island of Salamis. This is where the famous naval Battle of Salamis took place in 480 BC, with Xerxes observing the battle from the top of the mountain as the Persians suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of the Athenians.

Continuing the drive, you will pass the valley of Megara many centuries old, filled with groves of pistachio and olive trees with the view of the impressive mountains of the Peloponnese on the one side in the background.

You will have a short stop by the Corinth canal, which separates the mainland from the peninsula of the Peloponnese and connects the Ionian Sea with the Aegean Sea. There you will have the chance to walk over the bridge and enjoy breathtaking views, taking as many photographs as you would like to.

Your journey towards Epidaurus will continue with a 40 minute scenic drive along the coast of the Saronic Gulf. On the way your driver will point out the ruins of the ancient port of Kechries, from where St. Paul embarked his ship departing to Ephessus. Your windy but picturesque drive will give you impressive views of small islands and several fish farms. Reaching Epidaurus you will have a private tour of the spiritual sanctuary of Asclepius and the theater with the most famous acoustics in the world.

Among other things you will see the ancient stadium, the remainings of the ancient gymnasium and restaurant, the remainings of the temple of Artemis, as well as the very impressive Tholos, a round building with a labyrinth still existing in its basement, where some traditions say that the sacred snakes of Asclepius used to be kept. Since Epidaurus used to be one of the most famous ancient Greek healing centers and health treatment was very much related with the worshipping of the gods, the priests were often at the same time the healers of people. Partly restored and very impressive stands out the Avaton, a long rectangular building where the patients had to spend their first night and the god would come to their dreams. Part of their treatment would be based on that dream - message that the god had sent. With the great success that this sanctuary and healing center kept on having, more and more visitors with even more precious offerings kept on coming, and the evolution of the sanctuary was that created the need of building the ancient theater.

At the end of your guided tour you will be given some free time to walk up and down the theater or to stand in the center of the orchestra and speak out loud a monologue. The feeling of your voice spreading out all over the theater will be fascinating. During your free time you can also go for a quick walk through the tiny museum. Most statues and artifacts are in display in the archaeological museum of Athens, but some copies of them along with several marble bases with inscriptions and some of the ancient tools the doctors used, can be found there.

Leaving ancient Epidaurus you will continue with the drive to Nafplion, a picturesque sea port town on the Argolic Gulf. This was the first capital of modern Greece; it's a city with beautiful monuments and neoclassical buildings as well as two famous forts Palamidi and Bourtzi which is situated on an island opposite the port. You will be able to stroll around, take pictures and have lunch in the "shade" of the tall neoclassical buildings next to Sydagma square if time allows it.

Continuing your journey in the afternoon you will drive to the archaeological site of Mycenae, passing through the lush valley of Argolis with its many olive groves, lemon and orange trees. On your way you will drive pass the Mycenaean citadel of Tiryns and you will be impressed by its remaining cyclopean walls. Once upon a time there used to be a two story high palace of great importance on top of that hill. Continuing your drive you will also pass from the outside of one of the most ancient cities of Greece, dating back to 6000 BC, the city of Argos. Unfortunately almost nothing remains of it since the modern city was built on top, except for the ancient theater that was carved out of the rock of the Larissa hill. On the height of 300 meters(900 feet) lies the castle of Larissa or Argos, very well preserved and standing out from the distance.

Once in Mycenae you will enjoy a private guided tour through the treasury house of Atreus and the ancient citadel.

The Mycenaeans were very strategic and were always choosing the places to built their citadels having always in mind the defensive advantage over the attacks by their enemies. Therefore Mycenae was built at the one side of the lush valley, where most of the inhabitants of it would be occupied with farming, with the very steep and rocky mountains on the other side. There was only one way to reach the citadel and that was extremely well fortified, even more than what they really needed. The cyclopean walls, consisted by huge conglomerate blocks of local stone, still make us wonder how they managed to move them all the way up there. Cannons, guns and similar weapons did not exist at the time, which makes us think that these walls were mostly there to scare off the enemy and to show off how wealthy and powerful they were.

You will first stop and visit the beehive tomb of Agamemnon, as most of the locals call it, although the official name of it is the treasure of Atreus. Very much influenced by the Egyptians, with whom they had a great connection and commerce going on, the ancient Mycenaeans gave very big importance to their funerary customs and to where the royal family's last residence would be. The beehive tombs were being built many years before the death of whoever was supposed to be buried in them, impressing the people and giving additional honor to the "owner" of the tomb. There were at least nine monumental beehive tombs around the Acropolis of Mycenae, but this one is the largest and most impressive, which at the same time is also very well preserved. Walk inside the tomb passing the ancient pass that was leading to its one and only entrance and enter the tomb that still stands intact. Once inside you will see another smaller gate leading to an extra room, which must have been the treasury house of it. If the assumptions of the archaeologists are correct and this was the tomb of Agamemnon, try to imagine the amount of gold and jewels that must have been placed there, in order for him to take with to the afterlife.

Afterwards you will get back to your private vehicle for a short drive up the hill. From the parking of the site you will start ascending towards the citadel, seeing parts of the ancient city and two more beehive tombs on one hand and the cyclopean walls on the other. Take a deep breath as you finally reach the legendary Lions' Gate, the one and only official entrance to the citadel that still bears the emblem over the gate that represents a column protected by two lions. Walking a bit further uphill, you will have a magnificent view of the whole valley that ends by the port of Nafplion, the outside remainings of the ancient city, as well as the grave circle A which is inside the walls and was excavated by Heinrich Schliemann. Among the several skeletons on fetal position were found jewellery, seal stone rings and golden masks that were weighting 14 kilos in total. One of the masks was so different and impressive, that Schliemann yelled out that he had found Agamemnon's tomb, to be proved wrong when the treasury of Atreus was unearthed. This huge treasure from the grave circle A is now in display in the national archaeological museum of Athens.

At the end of your guided tour you will be given some free time to walk further up the citadel and reach the top, where the palace with two floors used to exist. Be prepared for a lot of hiking on steep rocks and to being exposed to the weather conditions since there are almost no trees inside the citadel today.

On your way down you can also make a small deviation and go visit the museum of Mycenae, if there is enough time available, which although it mostly has copies of the treasures that are displayed in Athens, it still is very interesting. Among other things you will see wall paintings(frescoes) from the palace and local houses, armor and weapons, a collection of pottery, jewellery made of seashells and non precious beads, as well as tablets that still bear the inscriptions of Linear B syllabic script.

As soon as you meet your driver back at the parking area, you will be offered the drive back to Athens, where you will be dropped you off either at your hotel, or another location of your preference.

Full day tour to Delphi

9 h. tour (Private tour)

(transportation + local guided tour of the archaeological site and museum of Delphi + stop at Arachova village + optional stop at Hosios Loukas monastery + free time)

Being in Athens and enjoying all of its great history and monuments, you shouldn't leave without visiting the "naval of the earth", Delphi, a site that has played an extremely important role at the evolution and political situation of ancient Athens and the rest of Greece.

Departing Athens with your private vehicle and driver, you will start heading north towards Delphi. On your way to Delphi your driver will give you information about all the places you will drive by, such as the area where the Marathon battle was fought. It is situated next to mount Pendeli, where all the marble for the constructions on the Acropolis, as well as for some buildings in Delphi, came from. On the 19th century marble from the same quarry was used for the construction of the impressive lake of Marathon which was built in order to provide with water the overpopulated city of Athens and which you will also be able to see as you drive by.

Continuing through the highway you will pass one of the largest planes near Athens and where most of the fresh vegetables for the big city come from. On the one side of it is situated the modern city of Thebes, which was built on top of the ancient one and therefore unfortunately not much remains from that very historical ancient city state, home of the tragedy of Oedipus. Next larger city on your way will be Levadia, built on the foothills of two very impressive rocks, where the oracle of Trofonios used to exist.

Then you will start driving up the mountain of Parnassus, with the scenery becoming much more rocky and dramatic. Many times until May, you can still see snow on the impressive ridges of the mountain, on the other side of which lies a big skiing center. Just before reaching Delphi, you will pass through the traditional village of Arachova, famous for the hand woven flokati rugs as well as its dairy products.

Once in Delphi, you will meet your tour guide and you will be given a guided tour of the museum in which one can see among other archaeological treasures, the unique bronze statue of the charioteer, the sphinx of Naxos, the friezes of remarkable treasury houses as well as remainings of the gold and ivory statues of Apollo and Artemis. Then proceed to the archaeological site and start climbing to reach the level of the Agora, before you enter the sacred way to the Athenian treasury, the stoa of Athens, the rock of Sybil and the temple of Apollo, where the Oracle was. Recently an amazing recreation of the bronze base of the tripod the Greeks had dedicated to the sanctuary after they won the battle of Plataea was placed back to its original position. After the end of your guided tour you will be able to climb higher to the ancient theater or even to the ancient stadium which is at least a 20 minute hike uphill but it's really worth it.

On your way down you can stop and drink water from the ancient sacred Kastalia spring, where all visitors would get purified, before entering the Oracle. Nearby lies the ancient gymnasium, the palaestra and the site of Athena Pronaia, the view of which you will be having from many parts of the site of Apollo and your guide will provide you with information about its history as well.

After your visit in Delphi, for which you will need approximately 2 and a half hours, you can either enjoy some free time for lunch in the town of Delphi or in the village of Arachova which is on your way back to Athens.

Optionally, on the way to Athens, you can extend the tour's duration by making a deviation and a stop to visit the famous monastery of Hosios Loukas, a UNESCO monument of the 10th century AD.

Back in Athens, you will be dropped you off either at your hotel, or another location of your preference.

Ancient Corinth and the Canal

5 or 7 h. tour (Private tour)

(Athens - Corinth Canal - Ancient Corinth Site and Museum - Athens)
Optionally you can extend this tour with a visit to Ancient Eleusis

This is going to be a journey with interesting things to see along the way, off the beaten track.

Your driver will be meeting you at the lobby of your hotel in Athens and you will board your private vehicle and start your tour.

After a drive through the western suburbs of Athens, you will start having the view of the Saronic Gulf on the one side of the road. First you will see an industrial part of it and the shipyards of Skaramangas. Ancient Eleusis, famous for the sanctuary of Demeter and the Eleusinian mysteries, that remain a mystery even today, will be on your way and can be part of your tour, if you choose to have the extended 7 hour tour. Unfortunately all the development of the industrial area today as well as the modern city of Eleusis does not really show the beauty of the landscape as it was described to be in the ancient times. In Eleusis you can see an interesting site and an archaeological museum with beautiful statuary from the classical days. From there started the procession of the Eleusinian mysteries, all the way to the Parthenon, every time the Panathenaia festival was being celebrated in Athens.

After you leave Eleusis, you will have the island of Salamis on the one side of the road, as well as the part of the sea, where one of the most famous naval battles in world's history was fought, in 480 BC, between the Athenians and the Persians. On the other side of the road will be mount Aegaleo, from where Xerxis was viewing the naval battle, sitting on his golden throne.

Soon after that, you will start seeing the impressive mountains of the Peloponnese in the distance, as you will be approaching the area of the man-made Corinth Canal, which is where the Mainland splits from the Peloponnese and where the Ionian sea "meets" with the Aegean sea.

A short stop by the Corinth Canal is required so that you will be able to get off and walk closer to it in order to photograph it standing on the bridge over it. The view will be breathtaking from both sides. There are several cafeterias on both sides where you can also enjoy a short coffee break.

It's a very short drive from there to the ancient site of Corinth, where your licensed tour guide will be waiting for you to greet you and to take you on a detailed exploration of ancient Corinth's site and museum. The impressive Acrocorinth fort was built right on top of where the ancient city used to be. Most of the remaining ruins are from the Roman era, except for the still standing monolithic columns of the temple of Apollo. You will see the Roman Odeon, the Ancient Springs, the Agora, the Bema from where St. Paul preached, the archaeological museum with some extraordinary samples of the Corinthian pottery, as well as the amazing view to the sea and the valley, proving why that city was so important and world famous back then. Among other things it was famous for some of the most corrupted business men that were living in it. The legend of Sisyphus, who cheated even Hades himself, emphasizes and exemplifies their way of thinking. That was also one of the reasons why St. Paul decided not only to visit, but to spend 18 months of his life there, preaching about ways of virtuous life.

At the end of the guided tour and before returning back to Athens, you will enjoy a short visit for photographs at the impressive Acrocorinth fort, with its walls remaining in most parts in a very good condition, will help you understand even more why in antiquity they used to say that it was one of the "eyes" of the Peloponnese and that whoever would manage to conquer it, would easily be able to conquer the rest of Greece.

From Ancient Corinth it is a very short drive to the ruins of the ancient port of Kechries where St. Paul embarked his ship after preaching to the Corinthians to get to Ephesus. You will have the chance to make a short stop there, before returning back to Athens.

From there you will walk around the outside of the Ancient Agora of Athens, which will get you into the flea market area (Monastiraki) and you will have the chance to grab and taste gyros and pita, at the oldest and most famous restaurant in Athens. This is where your tour will end.

This way you can spend more time on your own afterwards in that area or Plaka, or you can walk back to Syndagma, with your guide.

For those of you that would be interested in seeing the southern districts of Athens, as well as in enjoying one of the most beautiful coastal drives in the country, this tour is one of your best options.

Your professional English speaking driver will meet you at the lobby of your hotel in Athens. You will board your private vehicle and start driving south towards Cape Sounion. Your English speaking driver or licensed tour guide will give you information about the districts you will be driving through and will help you narrate yourselves as you will be heading southeast.

On your way to Cape Sounion, you will pass through some of the most beautiful suburbs of Athens right next to the sea, like Faliro, Voula and Vouliagmeni which among other things, is famous for its underground lake.

Then you will enter the windy road by the Saronic Gulf and you will enjoy driving next to the sea, passing several villages, little islands and areas that are mainly consisted by summer homes of the Athenians, with exceptional architecture.

Before your arrival to Cape Sounion, you will have the view of the remaining standing columns of the temple of Poseidon, from quite a distance. This was why in the past, sailors used to call the port next to it "Cavo Colones", meaning the port with the columns, which was also helping them find their way towards Attica. You can ask your driver to make a short stop for photos with the nice background of the temple of Poseidon.

As soon as you arrive in Cape Sounion, you will be given the chance to enjoy walking all the way to the top where the temple of Poseidon is and take pictures of the magnificent view all around you. When the atmosphere is very clear, you can see a lot of the Greek islands of the Aegean Sea from a distance. The temple of Poseidon was built in 444 BC to calm down Poseidon, after Athena was honored so much, by having the Parthenon built in honor of her. Since Athens was a great naval power in the ancient times, and their ships were exporting goods all over the known world, but also had many enemies, it was smart of them to use Cape Sounion as an alternative port. Moreover, very close to Cape Sounion, existed the mines of silver and lead of Lavrion. From the port of Sounion was that most of the lead was being exported. That was why Poseidon, the god of the sea and sailors, should be honored and always stand by their side on these long journeys through the sea, providing them with favorable winds and calm waters.

The cafeteria on top of the cape is also where you will be able to enjoy the marvelous view from, along with a coffee or snack.

Many famous and non famous people have been inspired by the view, the sunset and the atmosphere of this area and on the base of the temple, remain many of their names inscriptions, such as the one of Lord Byron. Don’t try to leave your autograph there! It was before the site was guarded, that that had happened, and today such an action is against the law.

On the way back to your hotel, depending on your tour's duration, you can stop at one of the many seaside tavernas to enjoy lunch or dinner, or you can stop at one of the beaches for a swim.

Transportation by a luxury type private car, minivan or minibus with a professional, English speaking, non-smoking driver.

Optionally escorted throughout by an officially licensed tour guide.

Food, beverages, gratuities and the entrance tickets to the monuments are not included.

Niki knows her stuff, and she comes across as an intelligent and credible source of verified information. My wife and I used her as our group tour guide in Olympia and then again in Athens, and we were very pleased.
