Gythion to Monemvasia Castletown

6 h. tour (Private tour)

(transportation + free time in the castletown + optional guided walking tour of Monemvasia + optional lunch or dinner)

For those of you that don't want to visit either Mystras, or the Diros Caves, we have an even more exciting suggestion.

Head east from Gythion and visit the only inhabited archaeological site in Greece, Monemvasia, a traditional medieval town inside a Venetian castle. Castles, walls, old mansions, narrow cobbled lanes, churches, low arches and vaults, coats of arms, imperial marble thrones, Byzantine icons all give the impression of a town untouched by time.

We can either arrange for you to have a private vehicle and driver to take you to Monemvasia and give you the time to explore it on your own, or we could arrange for a professional licensed tour guide to meet you as soon as you reach the castle's gate and offer you a walking tour of the main parts of the castletown, as well as a guided tour of the historical metropolis church of Christ in Chains. You can also visit next to main square of Monemvasia, the small but interesting museum there is, where you will see fragments of utensils and pieces of the architecture of the buildings from the middle age during which Monemvasia was at its flourishing period.

At the end of your walking and hiking exploration, you shouldn't leave this majestic place, without relaxing at the balconies or the indoor areas of any of the few but impressive cafes or restaurants of this town, that offer spectacular view of the Myrtoon Sea. Most people that first experience Monemvasia on a short visit, come back to stay!

Ask for our suggestions if you are planning on having a romantic lunch or dinner in Monemvasia, which by many people has been characterized as the "Santorini of the Peloponnese".

After the end of your experience in Monemvasia, your driver will be waiting for you outside the main castle's gate to drive you safely back to the port of Gythion.

Four of us were on a cruise of the Greek Islands and one of the stops was Gythion. We contacted Niki at Olympic Tours and she arranged a fantastic tour for us. When we arrived in port our tour guide, Dimitris, met us dockside and had a very nice private van wanting for us. The van was very clean and quite large (probably would seat up to 16 people) and so we had plenty of room to spread out. There was also a separate driver, so Dimitris could devote all of his time and attention on telling us about the landscape and history of this beautiful part of Greece. We drove for about 1.5 hours to Monemvasia, which is like the Rock of Gibraltar of Greece. It is a small island just off the mainland connected by a bridge. It is basically a huge rock coming right up out of the sea and is very picturesque. There is a charming little town on the side of the mountain that has a very medieval castle feel to it. The town is extremely quaint and the scenery and views are stunning. Dimitris is an Archaeologist and knew all about the history of the area and made the place come to life for us. He was very knowledgeable, accommodating and wanted to make sure everyone had a good time. He took us to a fabulous restaurant in a little boutique hotel and the balcony we sat on for lunch had breathtaking views. He helped us order all the local dishes and the food was fantastic. We toured the streets, churches and historical sights on this castle village and couldn't have had a better time. None of us had ever even heard of this place before and we are so glad we ventured out and visited this unique and charming place. We were extremely happy with the tour Niki arranged for us and would highly recommend her and her company for any tours throughout Greece. Niki is the Best!!!
